Resources for Professionals

In addition to work within Cincinnati's Urban Appalachian neighborhoods, UAC offers resources to the public which promote understanding and appreciation of Appalachian people and culture.

For further research about Appalachian topics, please see our Bibliography of Appalachian Resources.

For a list of upcoming Appalachian conferences and seminars, please see our Conference Schedule.

Cultural Sensitivity Training
UAC offers custom training sessions for professionals such as teachers, social workers, and health care workers, especially those in helping professions who deal with Urban Appalachian families.

Cultural Resources/Referrals
UAC acts as a liaison between Appalachian artists and the individual or organization. We work to meet individualized needs. UAC has an entire resource of storytellers, crafts people, workshop presenters, artists and musicians. Program costs will vary.

Frank Foster Library
Housed in the Urban Appalachian Council's main office in Lower Price Hill, this collection of books, research and educational materials is open to the public. Please make an appointment by calling 251-0202. Library hours are 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, with appointment.

Appalachian Idea Book
This hands-on guide offers practical suggestions and lessons for incorporating Appalachian culture and history into elementary classroom discussion. One copy should be available in every CPS elementary school library; however, individual copies are for sale by the Urban Appalachian Council for only $10 a piece.

Urban Appalachian Council's Perceptions of Home: A Traveling Exhibit
This exhibit combines pictures, stories, and soon, sounds of mountain migrants to create a powerful educational as well as artistic tool. UAC's Perceptions can be housed in school libraries, auditoriums and other community locations where people of all ages can enjoy and learn from its lessons. The booking fee for Perceptions of Home is $200 within the Greater Cincinnati area and $300 outside it. Host sites are also responsible for shipping and handling expenses.

Human Services
A primary goal of the Urban Appalachian Council is to work within communities to strengthen families. We have experienced facilitators and advocates who work with families and youth on a referral basis. Program space and availability is limited, but input and referrals from professionals are always welcome.
